Preparing for Fête de la Musique 2026:
Tips and Must-Knows for the biggest party of June
Fête de la Musique, A day dedicated to perhaps the oldest human endeavour: sitting in the sun and enjoying the music.
Fête de la Musique has been an enigma to me ever since I found out about its existence. Having been surrounded by Francophones for much of my university days, I was quickly made aware of that magical June solstice, where the entire city puts down their laptops and dedicates their whole day to letting the music move them. In case you're one of the lucky few that gets to be in Paris for the biggest party of the year (I’m jealous), here are some things you should know.
Fête de la Musique was conceived by Maurice Fleuret, director of music and dance at the French Ministry of Culture. According to his research, 1 in 2 young people in France played a musical instrument, but the evidence of that was nowhere to be seen in the streets of the cities. The music was everywhere, but you couldn’t hear it, and most definitely could not celebrate it. Maurice Fleuret set out to bring people out into the streets and to partake in community through music. In 1982, the first Fête de la Musique took place on the streets of Paris, and the tradition has continued to now in 2026!
So, you know you’re going to Fête de la Musique. The Eurostars are booked, the nails are done, the fits have been decided, and you’re gearing up your arm for fanning yourself all through the sunny day while you dance. How do you know you’re prepared for the day? What do you need to know?
Well, we’ve got you! With my insane investigative skills and a bit of begging my Parisian friends to contribute with their wisdom- here are the key things you should keep in mind.
1. Paris is your playground.
Fête de la Musique is best experienced through spontaneity. The beauty is in discovering the music as you walk through the streets and arrondissements, where neighbourhood choirs, jazz bands, and pop-up performances find their home on the sidewalk.
So if you’re going to be out on the streets, don’t stay in one place! Planning even a loose itinerary around the city/across the arrondissements/or even from one street to the next can turn your day into something magical when you least expect it.
2. Keep yourself hydrated, and keep yourself safe.
Not to scare you all, but next Sunday is about to be one of Paris’s hottest days in the month, and with temperatures soaring past 30 degrees Celsius, you need to be prepared. Keep drinking water all day and remind your friends to do the same. High temperatures also mean your phone will lose battery quickly, so do not forget to keep it charged, and keep your location shared with your friends.
Invest in both rehydration tablets and a juiced-up powerbank so that both you and your phone recharge, and you can enjoy the music for longer.
3. Learn how to travel across the city.
Sorry, Londoners, your contactless won’t work there! To use the Metro in Paris, you need to have the Île-de-France Mobilités digital pass. However, the Paris metro is open all night, till 7am on the 22nd, allowing free access and travel around the city. For occasional travellers, Île-de-France Mobilités is offering a special pass for 4.30 euros, allowing unlimited travel from Sunday 5pm- Monday 7 am. This ticket is sold on the day of Fête de La Musique and is available on the Île-de-France Mobilités app.
4. Celebrate music, but also celebrate community.
While you should be expecting absolutely immaculate energy in the city with music of all genres floating through the air, expect the same energy from the people! Music makes people a lot nicer, and don’t be afraid to talk to new people, ask for directions, and just join others through song and dance.
Lastly, if you’re in the mood for the club on the night of Fete, remember to check for events across the city online first, as many will be ticketed. Here are our top picks of dance parties we think you’d like:
